Spain kicked off their 2024 Olympics tournament in France with a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan, with Pau Cubarsi underperforming.
Juan Miranda and Sergio Gomez have both come to the defence of Pau Cubarsi after the 17-year-old Spain defender struggled for goals in his opening game of the tournament, a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan on Wednesday, according to Relevo.
Cubarsi start as a central defender alongside Barcelona team-mate Eric Garcia but the 17-year-old defender struggle to make his debut, being book for a foul seven minutes into the game and also giving away a penalty in stoppage time, with Santiago Denia deciding to take him off at half-time and bringing on Real Sociedad’s Jon Pacheco in his place.
However, teammates Miranda and Sergio Gomez have backed Pau Cubarsi. While Denia has no concerns about the 17-year-old centre-back’s maturity. And is expect to continue playing in the game against the Dominican Republic on July 27.
‘The yellow card affected him early in the game ยูฟ่าเบท. But he is a player who will give us a lot of benefits. He will get a lot of game time here,’ Miranda said of Pau Cubarsi.
Sergio Gomez added: ‘I don’t think he’s nervous. He’s a player who looks like he’s made of ice.’
